Chapter 1 – Down The Rabbit-Hole

Alice was sitting by her sister on the riverbank, feeling very bored. Her sister was reading a book with no pictures or conversations. “What’s the use of a book like that?” Alice thought.

She was just considering whether making a daisychain would be worth the trouble of picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran by. Nothing so odd in that—except the Rabbit pulled a watch out of its pocket, looked at it, and hurried on!

Alice jumped up, burning with curiosity, and ran across the field after it. The Rabbit popped down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. In a flash, Alice followed, never once considering how she was to get out again.

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel, then dipped suddenly. Alice fell! Down, down, down she went, too surprised to cry. She fell past cupboards, bookshelves, maps, and pictures hanging on pegs. She grabbed at a jar labeled “Orange Marmalade,” but it was empty, so she carefully placed it on a shelf as she passed.

Still she fell, wondering if she would fall right through the earth! Just as she was beginning to feel quite sleepy, bump! She landed on a heap of dry leaves, unharmed. She jumped to her feet. The White Rabbit was still hurrying along. Alice dashed after it through a long passage, and there she was—right in the middle of Wonderland!
