Introduction

Windmills

Origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. It has fascinated millions of people since it was invented in the eighth century.

In this book, you will find all sorts of ideas for making cards, animals and other fun items by folding paper. Some are traditional origami designs, while others involve some cutting, gluing and decorating as well.

The materials supplied with this book can be used to make almost all of the designs featured. A few of the models need larger sheets of paper or card. Of course, you can use different papers and card in other colours, textures and sizes to make any of the items in this book.

All the projects are illustrated with clear step-by-step pictures and instructions. Some are easy, while others are a little harder, so take your time, read the instructions and study the pictures carefully. Don’t worry if your first efforts aren’t perfect; keep practising and soon you will be an expert!

Materials

In the box with this book, you will find:

• 24 coloured sheets of paper

• 4 folded cards

• Scissors

• Glue

• 6 coloured Pencils

The sheets of paper and the cards are perfect for the origami and other projects in this book. If you want to add to the materials, you can buy special origami paper from art and craft shops, or you can use any paper that is thin and easy to fold, such as wrapping paper, or any thin card for the pop-up cards. You will also need the scissors, glue and coloured pencils for several of the designs.

Basic Techniques

Star Frame

When making any kind of folded-paper project, always work on a firm, flat surface, such as a clean table or desk. If you need to use glue or paints, lay down sheets of newspaper first to protect the surface in case of spills.

Make sure that the corners or sides of the paper or card are lined up before you crease it.

When you do make a crease, begin in the centre and smooth out firmly towards the ends.

As well as taking things slowly and carefully, make sure that the folds are as neat as you can make them. After folding, sharpen each crease by running your finger or fingernail along it. This is particularly important where several layers of paper are involved.

Before you start, read through the instructions and make sure that you have everything you need. Take your time.

If you go too quickly, you may make mistakes; if you don’t rush, you are more likely to get it right.

Follow the instructions and study the pictures to make sure you are doing everything correctly. If you get “lost”, either undo the folds until you get back to a bit that you can do, or look ahead at the next picture to see what the paper should look like.
